Do you need Life or Disability insurance but you are concerned
about the application process? Applying for coverage should not be hampered by
the process itself. Here are a few tips on making sure your application gets
through the process.
Understand that the insurance companies want the policies to get
issued too, so they are on your side. They (the insurance companies) want to
see you on a good day, not one of your bad days. You really can’t prepare for
the application like it was a math test; however, you can improve your results
by following a few steps.
First of all, if you exercise, don’t go for a heavy workout just
before any blood test or paramedical. The bouncing of a heavy jog might
increase the chances of depositing minor traces of blood in your urine.
Therefore, skip the workout for a day.
If you smoke, don’t squeeze in one last smoke just before a blood
pressure check. The cigarette might just increase your blood pressure reading
temporally.
Drink plenty of water for a day or two to be sure you are well
hydrated before a blood test. Flushing out your system just helps your entire
body. Fasting before your blood or urine test may not be a requirement, however
it is a good idea anyway. Why take the chance of increasing your fat and sugars
even if you don’t suspect a problem?
IF you think you are having a stressful day, and the nurse is
expected to arrive later, don’t feel bad about rescheduling the appointment. On
a low stress day, your levels will likely show better anyway. Schedule a
paramedical where you will be comfortable, like at home before breakfast.
Chances are, you will be rested, fasting, and calm in your own environment.
When it comes to the application itself, don’t try to hide things.
In part, at claim time, the application will be reviewed for accuracy. If you
smoke, admit it. If you saw the doctor for something, disclose it. If you are
taking over the counter medications, or if you are ingesting any herbal or
natural substances, disclose that too. If the underwriter knows what you are
taking, it may help explain a finding that otherwise might look
suspicious.
Provide more information than less. For disability insurance
saying that you visit a massage therapist once a month for strengthening and
good health to prevent back strain in your job, is a lot better than “I get a
massage 12 times a year for my back”.
In other words, give the underwriter a reason to say yes, not a
reason to say no.
