One Thousand Dollars a Day

There are no secrets to success, besides hard work. Nevertheless, one thing I have found to be fruitful and comes close to being a “secret to success” is this… “Do something every day that has the potential to earn $1,000.”

Our lives and work keep us so busy that we sometimes don’t do the things we know make us successful. We talk on the phone too much, we spend too much time on the internet, we respond to emails as if a response is needed in 30 seconds or our computer will explode and we often spend too much time at the water cooler. In addition, we let the business run us, rather than us running the business.

So, if we were to change one thing that would make a long term impact towards our success; what would it be?

At the end of the day, we need to take an inventory of what we have actually accomplished. Did we do all the right things? Did our “to do” list actually get smaller? Did all the important things get done? Did you do something that had the potential to earn you $1,000?

I for one, try to first do what is needed, day to day.  However, I have learned a small practice management tip a long time ago that helps keep the goal of potentially earning $1000.00 a day in mind. Once a day and often at the end of it, I ask myself the question: “Did I do something today that provided me with the potential to earn $1,000?” The actual dollar figure can be whatever you want, but I use $1,000 as my marking point. If I can’t specifically name that one thing; I return to my desk, and think of something.
I’m not talking about all the daily items we are expected to do. I’m not talking about returning a call where you might make some money, or close a sale.

I’m speaking about some future thing that will eventually make tomorrow’s successes a little better.

Have you ever received a phone call from a client or a company who wants to meet with you, and then realize that the client is acting upon a seed you had planted weeks, months or years ago? I had a Doctor call me a few years ago who and said they wanted to buy some disability insurance. I asked how he got my name, and he said “5 years ago you spoke to a group I was in”. He said “you gave everyone a business card on a magnet”. He further said, “I placed the magnet on my fridge and for the past 5 years, each time I went to get a glass of milk, I saw your name. When it came time to buy coverage, I didn’t dare call anyone else”.

The idea for the magnet was a small thing, but it’s that “extra” thing you do that can make a difference. Buying magnets for distribution, sending a flyer to a group of business owners, creating a blog, calling a million dollar client or acting on a prospecting idea. Not every idea has to be large. Regardless, if you do something every day that has the potential to earn $1,000 your ideas add up.

Think about it for a minute, if you work 260 days in a year (in addition to all your regular work items) think of something specific each day that has the potential to earn $1,000. Eventually these planted seeds come back to you. Sometimes from out of the blue, and sometimes you see them growing. Regardless, many of these ideas come back to you as profit.

If you commit to this and if you take the time to keep a log on what you do each day that has the potential to earn you $1,000 you will be very pleased when your efforts pay off.

In fact, if you eventually get stuck on what you might do on a particular day; you can always look back in your log to find something that worked before and repeat it. Every good idea is worth repeating, and every good idea is worth at least $1,000.

How Long Will 1 Million Dollars Last?

Once upon a time, a million dollars was a large sum of money. If you had it, you were a millionaire, and everyone was jealous. Today the question is often asked: “if you won a million dollars, would you quit work?” Well the answer depends on several factors like your age, your need for money, and even your health. To answer the question how long would one million dollars last, let’s look at it this way: How long will $1,000,000 produce an income for you before it runs out? Let’s say you needed to take $60,000 as an annual income to spend. Let’s also say that you wanted to increase that $60,000 by 2% per year just to keep up to inflation. To run the numbers, we would assume you wanted to invest your $1,000,000 in a relatively secure place. The rate of interest would be around 1.5% if you wanted a guaranteed return, or maybe a 5% return if you wanted to assume some risk. For argument sake, let’s give you 3.5% over time, and income tax at about 25%. With the above parameters, you...
